Google Chrome on Ubuntu?
[UPDATE: This post was published on the 3rd Sept. 2008. Since then much has changed and the Google Chromium browser is readliy available for Linux either direct from Google or there is a PPA with daily builds for Ubuntu users. Both work for me. END UPDATE]

However, all is not quite as it seems…
The new Chrome browser from Google in this first release is only for Windows (groan) although they are developing for Linux (Instructions on how to build it are here) and Mac too so I doubt it will be very long before we see something that can run natively on your Operating System of choice.
The picture above shows the Chrome browser running on an Ubuntu 8.04 desktop. However, there is some trickery going on here…
Anyone like to guess how I’ve done it? (And there is no Photoshop or image editing whatsoever. It is really running as you see it)
You can probably get it working on Wine too although I haven’t tried this: http://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=15106
looks like you are running it in virtualbox that is running in seamless mode
I dunno… VMWare? I give up.
@gadgit – that didn’t take long. Nice one.
@Anon – sorry no VMWare here but the right idea.
you are running it from windows as remote desktop (rdpclient) on ubuntu?
Good idea gusgus but no it was running on XP in a VirtualBox VM in “seamless mode”.
Seamless Mode uses remote desktop and disables the desktop and taskbar and such… so really, gusgus is correct as well. why not just build the source though?
@Daniel, thanks for the explanation. I wasn’t aware that was how seamless worked. As for building the source, Google’s site says that the build for Linux won’t actually do anything yet other than pass a few build tests…
I suppose Google are really aiming for a mass market, so if it won’t be an instant hit on the Windows platform, it doesn’t really matter to them. Can’t see why they haven’t done a multi-platform release otherwise. They’re supposed to be OS agnostic, no? It isn’t _that_ difficult writing compatible software.
If you want to see a second way of installing Chrome on Ubuntu have a look at this –

It’s very simple.
Yeah… I guess they could be looking for a mass market, but they don’t charge for the browser. I mean, why wait, unless Chrome is still a beta. The port should not be difficult, as I am sure that Google has used C# to build the original (windows) version, which needs few mods to port to *nix systems.
I theorize that Chrome IS, in fact, a beta. Google has done a lot of Free or Open-Source projects (Android, to name a rather large one), and I believe that when Chrome is available for Linux and Mac, we will see massive improvements over the already stellar windows version.
@Jake, chrome aint in C#. Its in C++. Its not even in VC++ its purely C++, thats why its faster than other browsers.
Linux Chrome has replaced Firefox on my Ubuntu system. It is so fast and slick. Am hopeful an ad blocker will be available at some point.
Here is my ap launch command: chromium-browser –enable-greasemonkey –enable-user-scripts –enable-extensions –enable-plugins chrome://newtab
I have also tried on Ubuntu. For slow site like Facebook, it is not that good right now. http://www.satya-weblog.com/2009/09/tried-chrome-on-linux-ubuntu.html
