Ubuntu & webbook now available online at CPW
Good news!
When we first announced the Elonex webbook, you could only get the Ubuntu version by visiting one of Carphone Warehouse’s bricks-and-mortar shops. Online they only had the old XP version listed.
Today that has changed. Now you can order a webbook, with Ubuntu pre-installed without having to go out at all!
Alan Bell has a bit more detail and comment over on the webbook blog, but if you simply can’t wait and must go and order one right now, here’s the page. Scroll down a bit to the box that says “Compare our top 10 offers” and check out the top three.
The T-Mobile deal looks pretty good to me š
I wonder what’s that Netbook they stock at Maplin (Linux only, unspecific, maybe LXDE).
The Carphone Warehouse link only seems to show the XP version ATM.

@Terry, I just checked the link above (where it says ‘Here’s the page’), and as long as you scroll down the page a bit to the “top 10 offers” section the first two entries say ‘webbook 10.2″ with Linux system’.

The Maplin thing is the same as the Novatech thing. It has an Xburst processor (like a MIPS) running at 335Mhz. It does run a kind of single-user linux but it is very locked down, you can’t really install anything else on it. It is more of an appliance than a real computer. The webbook is a real laptop that will run any Linux distro.

I saw the one from Maplin on Sunday at the shop.
Have just 917:27, 26/8/08) looked at the page you reference. The webbook with Linux is only
available with a service. The webbook alone is only available with XP (which is what I had found
30mins previously when I did a search for it on the site. So I still don’t know what it costs. š
But I shall go into my local store armed with Ubuntu leaflets and try to see one. Preferably with
a teenager or two in tow. At least we may be able to deflect a customer or two from wasting ĆĀ£100 and more just to install Windows.
