Please sell us some laptops

We need some laptops, just a couple of them and I really quite liked the look of a ThinkPad Edge laptop. Nice and shiny in our corporate red. We want a laptop that is bigger than a netbook, but not particularly huge. There is only one area of the specification that we are completely clear about, it must come without an operating system that we don’t want on it.

I think this one looks slick, don’t know if they would be able to do it in red, but it can’t hurt to ask…

I don’t think you can, unless you are very, very open about other specifications. In fact Dell (in USA) does sell some machines with Ubuntu and RH, but it does not advertise them much, you have to dig deeper in their website, and my feeling is that they are subpar compared to the windows ones. I The closest I’ve found is a laptop whose OS was replaced by a reseller, which you can do yourself. I gave up: bought a windows laptop and replaced the OS myself.

We are very open, don’t want the smallest netbook, or the biggest gaming laptop. Something inbetween that is unencumbered by an operating system we don’t want.

Dell(.co.uk) are saying that their new Vostro models will come with Ubuntu some time in April, so theoretically in the next 10 days or so. I quite like the look of their new Vostro 3300 and I’ll definitely buy one if they are good to their word, provide Ubuntu on it at some point and don’t restrict that option to models I’m not interested in.

Do you know about system 76? They sell all their products with Ubuntu only. No M$ for them!

I used EmperorLinux (http://www.emperorlinux.com) for my last two laptops (both Dell Latitudes) and I have been very happy with their tech support. I expect to buy my next laptop from ZaReason (http://zareason.com/), they seem very knowledgable over e-mail and have gotten good reviews. ZaReason focuses on lower-end laptops relative to EmperorLinux. Both will sell you a laptop with _only_ Linux on it.

  • Eddward says:

They don’t have red, but ZaReason has laptops. I bought one of their desktops and I have to say I’m very happy with it. The only problem I had was sound. I won’t go into the detail or my fix, but I don’t blame the hardware since I was able to fix it with a reasonable change in software. I had a lot of questions up front and a few after the purchase. They’ve been very easy to deal with.

They offer Several choices of Ubuntu, a few other flavors of Linux and have a no-OS option.

Maybe not so relevant, but I received a very nice refund (97€) from Dell. Clearly, I am *very* happy about it.

One more requirement! UK keyboard and power supply. Ideally not an import.

Dell Latitude N series. Phone them, forget the website.

    Novatech

    Quote from website
    “Choose your own operating system
At Novatech all of our PCs and Laptops are available with or without an operating system.”

    • Bruno Girin says:

Except that their quote is not quite true. Their V13 Executive laptop is only available with Windows 7 pre-installed. Anyway, it’s still a lot better than the competition.

      • That’s a pity, I go my V13 in December 2009 without any OS and it’s running Debian Squeeze perfectly well. The guy on the shop perfectly well understood that I’d be running Linux on the unit, and said though there was no formal support from Novatech there was an active Linux community on their forums (which there is).
